God bless,

The final report on this year’s grain harvest is that the threshing was held on Saturday, August 30, on the home farm in Richland County. The weather was nice, although a little warm. We threshed just over three loads of oats. The yield was 85 bushels of oats and a nice wagonload of straw. I’m grateful to Kyrie Kinney for allowing me to cut some of his oats for this event. It started off with a broken belt, but fortunately I had on hand the splicing material and the tool to fix it. Once we got past this temporary setback, the day proceeded without any problems.
There were as many as 84 people in attendance. Clarence Geier from our parish, a native of St. Mary’s Ridge and no stranger to threshing, came to celebrate his 89th birthday. Several parishioners from Cathedral and Viroqua were there, and a number of friends and relatives. Many in attendance were content to watch and reminisce, while some were experiencing this for the first time. Some, like Paul Zei and Greg Marco, were more interested in checking for signs of deer. I can safely say that a good time was had by all. For all practical purposes this brings my farming to an end for this year. I spent Labor Day cleaning up the equipment and putting it back into the shed. God willing, we will get to use it again next year. Since Labor Day will be late next year, I think we’ll plan on Saturday of the weekend before–August 29–“God willing and the creek don’t rise.”
